The Art and History of Sewing
Sewing is the craft of fastening or attaching with stitches made by needle and thread. It’s one of the oldest textile arts, dating back to the Paleolithic era. Long before spinning and weaving, people across Europe and Asia stitched fur and leather garments using bone or ivory needles and thread made from sinew or other natural fibers. For thousands of years, all sewing was done by hand. The 19th-century sewing machine and modern computerization enabled mass production, but hand sewing remains a hallmark of high-quality tailoring, couture fashion, and custom dressmaking. Today, it’s both a practical life skill and a creative outlet pursued by professionals, artists, and hobbyists alike.
